Lisping (TUTLANA)
A lisp is a functional speech disorder that involves the inability to correctly pronounce one or more sibilant consonant sounds, usually s or z .
Lisping is a speech disorder characterized by the inability to correctly pronounce the sounds of s or z , known as the sibilant consonants. Usually th sounds are substituted for the sibilants. The word "lisp," for example, would be pronounced "lithp" by someone with this speech disorder.
Many children lisp at certain stages of speech development, especially when they lose their front primary teeth
Lisping is, therefore, sometimes called a developmental phonetic disorder. Frontal or interdental lisp is produced when the tongue protrudes through the front teeth when teeth are missing and is the most familiar type of lisp. Sibilant production may be interfered with in a number of other ways as well. These are all classified as lisping and include excessive pressure by the tongue against the teeth, the tongue held too far back along the midline of the palate, and a "substitute hiss" produced in the throat or larynx.
Sometimes children with functional speech disorder have problems making other sounds, such as sh , l , r , and ch . When a child cannot produce these sounds correctly, the condition is usually not considered a true lisp, but is a functional speech disorder.
Children can have a functional speech disorder as well as a developmental phonological disorder. The latter is not a matter of being able to physically make a specific sound but is a language disorder. These children have trouble organizing the sounds of speech in common patterns and may consistently replace one sound with another. For example, a child may say "wun" instead of "sun" or "doe" instead of "so."
There are four main types of lisps.
Mispronunciation of Letters or Letter Combination
Many children become tongue-tied over certain sounds. For example, 2-year-olds often substitute an f or d sound for th as in "I need to go to the bafroom" instead of "I need to go to the bathroom” or a w sound for an l or r such as "wion" instead of "lion". Consonant blends, involving two consonants right next to each other, are typically difficult and produce "Soppit" instead of "Stop it". Two-year-olds also frequently mix up multisyllabic words or simply shorten them as in "Gimme dat amal" instead of "Give me that animal". These mispronunciations are common until age 7. As long as your child's speech is improving over time and is mostly understandable by age 3, there is probably no reason for concern
On the other hand, certain
mispronunciations are red flags at the preschool age. If your child can't say vowels or if she talks using mostly vowels, omitting whole consonants, speak with her doctor. Since children attempt to say words as they hear them, this may be a sign that your child is not able to hear all the sounds in words. Temporary, mild hearing loss from an ear infection can slow a child's ability to understand language well enough to speak clearly
Treatment: A person suffering from tutlana is taught about the correct use of speech organs for speaking the words correctly. After this the person is subjected to regular practice to become habitual of speaking out correctly.
Fees: Minimum fees is Rs. 5,000=00 (up to 3 alphabets). If the number of alphabets is more than three, Rs. 1000=00 per alphabet will be charged extra. Hostel facility plus food charges will be extra @ Rs. 150=00 per day.
Time: 10 days for alphabet ‘R’. 2 days per alphabet for others.
If the child is small, the parents should come to the centre along with the child for 1-2 days and then make the child practise at home as per our directions. Regular practice will give guaranteed success. Our one day fees is Rs=2000.
